Third World Bunfight in association with Onassis Cultural Center/Fast Forward Festival (Athens), Kampnagel Hamburg, Festival de Marseille, Vooruit (Ghent), Teatro Maria Matos (Lisbon), LIFT (London) and Kunstlerhaus Mousonturm Frankfurt am Main present SANCTUARY.
SANCTUARY is a surrealist fiction set in a labyrinth. The cast and the characters are European citizens, migrants and refugees whose sanctuaries have been ruptured.
Central themes of the work, since its inception, have been the varied and surreal states of limbo in which so many refugees find themselves within the EU, and the simultaneous rise of border fences, surveillance, xenophobia and nativism. But the work also looks at notions of home - homes lost, homes threatened, and homes yearned for - and the fundamental human need for sanctuary, security and opportunity.
The processional performance will take the form of a labyrinth constructed from security fences, in which are located 8 solo scenes and a waiting room.
A reflective work rather than a work of activism, SANCTUARY will straddle the terrain between visual/installation art and performance.
