*The Examination

Covid friendly #Programme with confidence

The Examination premiered in 2019 to critical acclaim and features Brokentalkers’ distinctive blend of biography, socio-political discourse and breathtaking theatricality, leaving 'no stone unturned' in its interrogation of attitudes and a section of society too often ignored. Drawing on historical research and testimony from current and former prisoners and bringing this vividly to life through performance, powerful imagery and a visceral sound scape, The Examination is uncompromising and revelatory.

"A superbly slippery piece of theatre... A piece of theatre unlike any other" -- The Stage

"Brilliant. Again and again The Examination pulls the rug out from under you" -- Fest

"No easy escapes in Brokentalkers’ sly, provocative play" -- Irish Times

Winners of the Best Production and Best Performer Awards at the 2019 Dublin Fringe Festival The Examination, performed by stand-up comedian and ex-prisoner Willie White and Brokentalkers director Gary Keegan, explores the topic of human rights.

The Examination is the outcome of a 12-month research and creative process period, that saw Brokentalkers’ directors Gary Keegan and Feidlim Cannon hold theatre workshops and interviews with prisoners and former prisoners in various settings including Mountjoy Prison and PACE Training and Education Services. This has complemented wider historical analysis undertaken by Associate Professor Catherine Cox (UCD), with Professor Hilary Marland and Dr Rachel Bennett (University of Warwick). All of this activity is part of a Wellcome Trust Award, “Prisoners, Medical Care and Entitlement to Health in England and Ireland, 1850-2000” based at the School of History, UCD.
