Andy Warhol is one of the most influential artists of the second half of the 20th century. His pioneering approach to filmmaking extended the radical ideas of his visual art into cinema and had a profound influence on experimental film.
Between 1963 and 1971, Warhol produced more than 4,000 reels of film, from silent portraits to works exploring sound, performance, duration and celebrity. His films became an essential part of his artistic practice.
In 1982, Warhol agreed to a project initiated by the Whitney Museum of American Art and The Museum of Modern Art in New York to research and restore his films, withdrawn from circulation since 1972. The Andy Warhol Film Projectcontinued after his death in 1987, helping to preserve his cinematic work.
