The Tiger Lillies were formed in London in 1989 by frontman, songwriter and founder Martyn Jacques. Having spent much of his twenties living above a brothel in Soho, Jacques drew on the strange and vivid world around him as he developed his distinctive voice and songwriting. The band emerged soon after he acquired his first accordion.
The Tiger Lillies quickly developed a unique sound and style, moving from London pubs to major international stages. They have toured extensively and collaborated across disciplines, from theatre and circus to dance, photography and classical music. Highlights include the Olivier Award-winning cult musical Shockheaded Peter and a Grammy nomination for The Gorey End.
Their dark, theatrical world combines pre-war Berlin cabaret, anarchic opera and Romani music, with echoes of Bertolt Brecht and Jacques Brel. Their songs explore the darker sides of life—prostitution, addiction, violence and despair—through a distinctive mix of black humour, irony and beauty. Known as an “anarchic Brechtian street opera trio”, The Tiger Lillies create visceral, unpredictable performances that continually challenge the boundaries of cabaret and theatre.
