13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests jointly commissioned by the Andy Warhol Museum and Pittsburgh Cultural Trust for the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts now celebrates its 13th Anniversary Tour. The new performance features a special encore with additional Screen Tests.

Songwriters, Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips, formerly of Luna and currently with Dean & Britta, composed music for a selection of Warhol’s four-minute, silent film portraits, the Screen Tests, which take the form of a multimedia performance featuring large scale video projections of the Screen Tests above the musicians performing live on stage.

The Screen Tests' four-minute black-and-white silent film portraits from the 1960s were originally used as part of the light show for Warhol's 1966 multimedia happening, the Exploding Plastic Inevitable, which showcased the radical art rock of the Velvet Underground. Dean & Britta probe the subtle nuances of mood reflected in the Screen Tests' portraits, lyrically and musically illuminating the shadowed psyches of the candidates for Factory Superstardom who willingly submitted to Warhol’s cool cinematic gaze.

This program contains screen tests featuring: Ann Buchanan, Paul America, Edie Sedgwick, Billy Name, Susan Bottomly, Dennis Hopper, Mary Woronov, Freddy Herko, Nico, Richard Rheem, Ingrid Superstar, Lou Reed (Coke), Jane Holzer (Toothbrush).

Alternative and flexible performance formats have been designed for this production.
