Akram Khan is one of the most celebrated and influential dance artists of his generation. Over more than two decades, he has created a distinctive body of work combining powerful storytelling with contemporary dance and kathak. His acclaimed works include Jungle Book reimagined, Outwitting the Devil, XENOS, Until the Lions, Kaash, DESH, Vertical Road, Gnosis and zero degrees.
A natural collaborator, Khan has worked across disciplines and cultures with artists including Juliette Binoche, Sylvie Guillem, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Israel Galván, Kylie Minogue, Florence + the Machine, Anish Kapoor, Antony Gormley and Nitin Sawhney. His work is known for its emotional intensity, imaginative storytelling and ability to connect with audiences worldwide. In 2012, he choreographed a section of the London Olympic Games Opening Ceremony to widespread acclaim.
Khan has developed a particularly close relationship with English National Ballet, for whom he created Dust as part of Lest We Forget, followed by his acclaimed reimagining of Giselle. His most recent work for the company is Creature.
His many awards include two Laurence Olivier Awards, a Bessie Award and the ISPA Distinguished Artist Award. He was appointed an MBE for services to dance in 2005 and is an Associate Artist of Sadler’s Wells.
